Proposal to spin off air traffic control from FAA generates debate

Delta Air Lines is going head-to-head against the rest of the airline industry on a topic that could affect airline flights for years to come: A proposal to spin off air traffic control from the federal government.

Proponents say air traffic control should not be subject to the whims of Congress and politics, which in recent years have left the FAA vulnerable to sequestration, furloughs and budget cuts.

Opponents say the move would amount to privatizing a crucial national asset and function — one that works fine the way it is.

The debate will heat up in coming weeks, with FAA funding set to expire March 31.
