Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is selling an unusual limited-edition gift card aimed at aviation aficionados.

The gift cards are made from a retired DC-9 aircraft, and vary in color and condition depending on the part of the plane it came from. Delta said it has made 2,500 of the aluminum gift cards, and is selling them on ebay.

The price tag is also unusual: Each card costs $250 and has $50 of gift card value for buying Delta flights. The card is intended to be a collectible and comes in a display carrier.

The DC-9 Delta made the cards from was manufactured in 1975, and represents a path through defunct airline history. The plane was originally flown by Allegheny Airlines, then Eastern Air Lines, then Northwest Airlines, which was acquired by Delta.

The tail of that same DC-9 is now part of a reception desk in a premium check-in area at Los Angeles International Airport, according to Delta.

Delta sells regular gift cards all year long, but debuted the special DC-9 aluminum gift cards this month.
